WRITTEN BY THE LAND
Dene Tsili Winter School
A film about journeying with an open mind and embracing the human spirit and natural beauty of the land around you. Inspired by the words of Walter Bezha who told me that Dene “history is written in the land”, this film is a look at how our world is shaped by the connections we make with the land, it’s people and the time we share in tandem.
These images are taken from February and March 2017 during the two-week on-the-land Dene Ts'ı̨lı̨ School run by the Sahtu Renewable Resources Board. As a student guest, I had the privilege to experience the camp and learn alongside youth from across the Sahtu. This film is a look at my own experience and is dedicated to all the participants, elders and teachers who made the experience so valuable. Máhsı.
The camp was made possible by the Sahtu Renewable Resouces Board, NWT Environment and Natural Resources - Sahtú Region, the NWT On-the-Land Program, Continuing Our Journey - the National Indian Brotherhood Trust Fund, and Western Arctic Moving Pictures/Hands On Media Education.
Film made possible by The Students On Ice Foundation and MEC Outdoor Nation and Northwright Air.
Bennet Field is 35km past winter road junction 914 on the Bear River, in the Sahtu, Northwest Territories.
In the Middle of Everything
As a participant of the 2016 Students on Ice Arctic Expedition to Nunavut, Labrador and Greenland, this film was put together by our team to document those subtle moments that rush you by and those that stick with you for a lifetime. Cut with wildlife footage, sampled original music and featuring performances and presentations from a diverse team of educators on board the ship, this acts as gift to all those who were a part of that incredible 2-week journey.
Inspired by the words of Greenlandic artist Miki Jacobsen (shown dancing at 2:52), who believed that things are neither lost nor found in the universe, rather they exist in a perfectly intricate and unexplainably beautiful reality all around us. Put in his own words, we all exist "in the middle of everything”.
